APS Center for Native American and Indigenous Research hiring a New Reference Archivist

The American Philosophical Society is hiring a new Reference Archivist at the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (https://www.amphilsoc.org/library/CNAIR). This position will assist people in accessing materials in the APS Library & Museum's Indigenous-related collections, digitize materials, and enhance and improve how these materials are described and presented, among other things.

They are looking for someone committed to cultural sustainability and who understands the dynamics between Indigenous communities and archives and museums. An MLIS is not required and we are considering a diverse range of types of experience.

Dartmouth Postdoctoral Fellowship in Linguistics

The project has as its main goal the establishment of an accessible mirror of the DOBES endangered languages collections at the Institute for the German Language (IDS) in Mannheim, thereby making them part of the recently funded Text+ research data infrastructure consortium in Germany. Creating such a mirror of collections that are still subject to change poses some technical challenges, as well as some legal and organizational aspects that need to be worked out. The ideal candidate will work on all of these and has experience in language documentation as well as some programming skills.

Assistant Director, Serrano Language Revitalization Project

Reporting to the Director of Education, the Assistant Director, Serrano Language Revitalization Project (SLRP) is responsible for developing the strategy and building/amending the overall plan to ensure the proficiency of the Serrano language within the tribal community. In addition to driving the overall strategy, the individual will also oversee the day-to-day operations of the Serrano Language Revitalization Project team to meet the intended long-term objectives for staff, activities, and indigenous language resources. They will work in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Education, the Director of Education and the Education Board to ensure the quality and future vision of the overall SLRP program services, activities, and initiatives provided to the San Manuel Community. The objective of this program is to create a high achieving culture which leads to college completion or career readiness for the Tribal Community all while supporting the tribal community to become proficient in the Serrano language.

Contract Position with The Language Conservancy

The Language Conservancy is accepting applications immediately for a project-based workshop in January 2021

Seeking to fill project-based contract positions for working as a transcriber in a two-week remote word-collection workshop for the Ute Mountain Ute language.  

All data collected will be used to create a dictionary database, online dictionary and app as well as language learning textbooks, apps, and other media projects in the future.

Work will include remote control of a word collection process with one to two speakers of the Ute Mountain Ute language using the Rapid Word Collection process through semantic domain association. 

Experience using Zoom, Google Drive, Audacity, Google Sheets, Excel, Tshwane-Lex are a plus.

Indigenous Linguist – Department of Anthropology, University of Winnipeg

The Department of Anthropology is seeking an Indigenous linguist who will help build an interdisciplinary Indigenous languages focus at The University of Winnipeg. We are seeking an individual with training in descriptive linguistics and/or language documentation and who has experience developing curriculum, programming, and research relevant to the revitalization of Indigenous languages in Manitoba and neighbouring regions. The successful applicant will be an effective teacher whose scholarship is grounded in community-engaged practices and methodologies and who has a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment. The ability to speak an Indigenous language spoken in Manitoba or neighbouring regions is an asset.

Job: Assistant / Associate Professor, University of Texas at Austin

The Department of Religious Studies at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a position in Maya religion in the context of Mesoamerican history and cultures at the level of tenure-track Assistant Professor or early Associate Professor with tenure. The Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream appointment in the area of Language Diversity. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, and will begin on July 1, 2019.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in linguistics by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths.  Candidates must have expertise and experience in syntax, semantics and experimental fieldwork of Brazilian languages with the aim of strengthening international partnerships and developing exchange and experiential learning programs with institutions and universities in Brazil.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program, and maintain an active research agenda. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach and supervise students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, advance linguistically-grounded relationships with Brazil and participate in the academic life of the department.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications or forthcoming publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, accolades or awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching linguistics will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations  submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

Additionally, evidence of deep engagement with Brazilian languages must be demonstrated in research outputs and by collaborations with Brazilian communities and existing (or planned) partnerships in Brazil.
