Code of Conduct

Annual Meetings

(Adapted from AMP 2020 Code of Conduct and the LSA's Civility Policy at https://www.linguisticsociety.org/content/lsa-civility-policy.)

SSILA is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, or any other personal characteristics. We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Conference participants violating these rules may be expelled from the conference, at the discretion of the conference organizers.

While conference events will be attended remotely, we hold conference attendees to the same code of conduct that would apply at an in-person conference. The behaviors below are unacceptable during any form of conference-related activities both during and outside of conference sessions.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Coercive, intimidating, harassing, abusive, derogatory or demeaning actions or speech. Note that the latter is distinct from vigorous, reasoned disagreement compatible with norms of civil behavior.

  • Verbal or written comments that reinforce social structures of domination related to sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, or any other personal characteristics

  • Displaying sexual content in public fora

  • Deliberate intimidation or stalking

  • Behaviors intended to make a person or group feel unwelcome, or to encourage ostracism of any individual or group

  • Harassing photography or recording

  • Sustained disruption of talks or other events

  • Inappropriate physical contact

  • Unwelcome sexual attention of any kind

  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviors

In addition, participants are asked to adhere to the following rules:

  • The recording of any presentations or content in any format is strictly prohibited.

  • Participants should not copy or take screenshots of Q&A or any chat room activity that takes place in the virtual space.

Reporting

If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it to conference staff as soon as possible. Harassment and other code of conduct violations reduce the value of our event for everyone. Our team will be happy to assist you to feel safe for the duration of the event. We value your attendance.

Enforcement

Participants asked to stop any harassing or unacceptable behavior are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, event organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep SSILA a welcoming environment for all participants. Organizers may take action to redress anything with the intent or clear impact of disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants.
